Safety Operation Hurricanes 2009

Hurricanes and cyclones occur each year in the Pacific Ocean from May 15 to November 30 and in the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea from June 1 to November 30.
Los huracanes y ciclones se presentan cada año en el Océano Pacífico del 15 de mayo al 30 de noviembre y en el Océano Atlántico, Golfo de México y Mar Caribe del 1 de junio al 30 de noviembre.
Mexico will carry out the safety operation “Hurricanes 2009” with the goal of safeguarding the population that could be affected at ports and national waters, taking all the necessary actions to have a proper, prompt and coordinated response in the face of possible emergency situations.
México aplicará el Operativo de Seguridad “Huracanes 2009” con el objetivo de salvaguardar a la población que pueda estar afectada en puertos y aguas nacionales, tomando acciones para dar una respuesta adecuada, oportuna y coordinada ante las posibles situaciones de emergencia.
Hurricanes and cyclones occur each year in the Pacific Ocean from May 15 to November 30 and in the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea from June 1 to November 30.

Communication and Transportation Ministry (SCT) of Mexico will carry out the safety operation “Hurricanes 2009” with the goal of safeguarding the population that could be affected at ports and national waters, taking all the necessary actions to have a proper, prompt and coordinated response in the face of possible emergency situations.

This operation has destined 75 boats, 224 land vehicles, 49 power plants, 55 meteorological stations for recording local conditions and 700 radios. The support of 382 officers from the General Direction of the Merchant Marine and the personnel from Federal Marine Guard will be available to help and rescue all affected persons at the ports.

Although there is still no reliable forecast on the number of tropical cyclones that will form this year, in case of appearing they will be named according to the list established by the National Hurricane Center of the United States in the following order: in the Northeast Pacific: Andrés, Blanca, Carlos, Dolores, Enrique, Felicia, Guillermo, Hilda, Ignacio, Jimena, Kevin, Linda, Marty, Nora, Olaf, Patricia, Rick, Sandra, Terry, Vivian, Waldo, Xina, York and Zelda. In the Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea: Ana, Bill, Claudette, Danny, Erika, Fred, Grace, Henri, Ida, Joaquín, Kate, Larry, Mindy, Nicholas, Odette, Peter, Rose, Sam, Teresa, Víctor and Wanda.

Together with this operation, Civil Protection intensified the publication of safety measures for facing this type of natural phenomenon and let the population know about the available shelters in case of emergency. Beach tourist destinations exposed to hurricanes have already designated certain hotels as shelters, after a thorough investigation of facilities in order to guarantee they fulfill the conditions necessary to safeguard the population.
