Cabo San Lucas, Fishing Paradise in Mexico

If you are visiting Los Cabos, or if you are planning to go there, fishing is one of the activities you can't miss. It is a recreational pastime and a highly entertaining sport, as well.

It can't be denied that sport fishing played a very important part in turning Los Cabos, (particularly Cabo San Lucas), into a preferred tourist destination. Thanks to this sport, investors and businesspeople decided to promote the region and created several tourist developments. The area has been constantly growing as a tourist destination since 1974.

The location of this port at the southernmost part of the state and peninsula, as well as the gentle swells and warm waters of the region, make this a favorable place for the reproduction and inhabitance of a rich marine wildlife.

Some of the species of fish that can be found here include: Dorado, Peto, Sea Bass, Yellowfin Tuna, Whahoo, and of course, Marlin. Marlin is particularly popular and has earned Los Cabos the title of "The World Capital of the Marlin”. Marlin is related to Sailfish and Swordfish. Although it doesn’t have a dorsal fin as big as these other species, its size is comparable: 600 on occasions, Marlins weighing 1320 lbs. have been caught. Marlin fishing is a discipline that requires not only patience and technique, but it is also recognized for its elegance and eco-friendly practice of releasing the fish.

There are two species of Marlin in the area: The Blue Marlin is the most abundant and frequent catch. It is a very strong and heavy fish, so you will have to fight hard to get it, but if you catch one, you will have a trophy that would be worth all the effort. The second type of Marlin is the Striped Marlin which can be identified by the vertical stripes on its scales. This Marlin can jump out of the water, even after being caught.

The next most sought-after species is the Dorado which gets its name from its golden caudal fin. Above all the kinds of fishing we can do in Los Cabos, Carp fishing is the most popular. We can practice it by renting a boat from many available for that purpose at the port. You should know that a license or permit, for a day or a year, is required for fishing. However, there are some boat rentals that include the fishing permits and licenses for the day for groups of people. To make payment easy, many rentals accept credit cards and even electronic transfers or Paypal! Obviously, as in many other activities, it is suggested that you could spend the day not fishing just by yourself but with other people. When you go out fishing you can bring food and drinks on board.

Finally, if you do not like the idea of getting on a boat, you can also enjoy fishing from the shore; however, the catch won´t be the same as if you fish on open sea.

You must keep in mind that the fishing supply may be free, but it is not unlimited. To avoid overfishing, the guides set limits to what a person can catch. On the other hand, after a day of fishing, a tourist can take his catch to most of the hotels or restaurants in the area to have it prepared for dinner in a variety of delicious ways.
