Morelia, capital of the State of Michoacan, is a beautiful city built during the colonial era. We recommend spending a few hours delighting in the elegant architectural heritage of its buildings such as Palacio Nacional and the Cathedral at the Historic Center, recognized as World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. Michoacan Museum is of great architectural value for the magnificent baroque house that hosts it, in addition to the priceless archeological jewels it exhibits. Afterwards, make an excursion to the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary, declared World Natural Heritage by UNESCO, it is home to thousands of these colorful insects that travel each year from the United States and Canada for hibernating.

Zacatecas was one of the most important mining cities during the colonial era, declared World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO for its great historic and architectural wealth. One of the most interesting tours starts at the Eden Mine, where you will board a train that will take you through a 600 meter long tunnel through rocky structures, hanging bridges and a waterfall to reach the cable car that will take you to the Bufa Mountain so you can appreciate the whole city from above. On this mountain are the Mexican Revolution Plaza, the Patrocinio Virgin Chapel, the Zacatecas War Museum, the Meteorological Observatory and the Illustrious Men Mausoleum. Among the cobblestone streets of the Historic Center is the Cathedral, host of the Episcopal Gallery that exhibits valuable religious treasures through portraits, etches, bibles, relics and silver work. The Rafael Coronel Museum is located at the former Convent of Saint Francis of Assisi and exhibits popular Mexican art and an exquisite collection of more than 10,000 masks, the largest in the world. A few minutes from the city is the Vicerroyal Museum of Guadalupe, founded as School for the Propagation of the Faith in 1707 for educating friars in order to evangelize the “unfaithful”. It hosts one of the most important collections of colonial paintings in Mexico, including dozens of beautiful works by diverse artists and monumental paintings by Miguel Cabrera; in addition to 10,000 priceless books from that era.

After these days of cultural fascination, we recommend you travel to San Luis Potosi, where the Sierra Madre Oriental is the geological formation that creates the rapids of Huasteca Potosina, the perfect place to inject some adrenaline into this route. This exciting adventure is a fun boat ride through the rapids of Santa Maria Canyon thanks to the force of the water after it descends from the spectacular waterfalls of Tamul and Minas Viejas.

In Guanajuato, the extraordinary architectural wealth of the Historic Center at this important colonial mining center was declared World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. Its buildings show the baroque art of New Spain, such as in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guanajuato and San Diego Temple. This city gave birth and witnessed Mexico’s Independence War and its visitors can appreciate it in the Museum of the Alhóndiga de Granaditas and Pipila Monument. Among its alleys, tunnels and peaceful plazas there is a great array of museums, markets and restaurants of delicious traditional dishes. Guanajuato is also the proud host of the greatest cultural event in the country, the Cervantino International Festival, gathering artists from around the world every year. The surprising Mummy Museum exhibits more than 100 bodies that were preserved by the great amount of minerals in the soil. Diego Rivera Museum House is where this famous muralist was born and exhibits one of his greatest collections. Do not miss the opportunity to visit the Iconographic Museum of Quijote, where you will enjoy a vast amount of paintings, drawings, textiles, coins and sculptures dedicated to the star of Cervante’s literary masterpiece.

The city of San Miguel de Allende is a magic town of unique beauty, considered National Monument. Its particular colonial trace and mysticism have made it the refuge of choice for talented artists from around the world who exhibit their work in various museums and galleries. Among its great colonial buildings are Allende Museum House, Conception Temple, Archangel Michael Parish and Saint Francis Temple. This picturesque tourism site is the venue of the Chamber Music Festival, Jazz Festival and Wool Fair every year. In the evenings, multiple and charming cafés, restaurants and bars light up the night to the sound of live music so you can dance till dawn.

Guadalajara is the next stop in this wonderful tour through one of Mexico’s most interesting regions and there is no better way to enjoy it than on the Tequila Express. This train will take you through the area where agave is grown and processed for illustrating the creation of the Mexican drink by excellence. From Friday to Sunday, at ten in the morning, it takes passengers from the station in Guadalajara to Hacienda San José del Refugio that safeguards many centuries of history in its ancient ovens where agave juice is extracted. For a perfect finish, spend some days in the paradise city of Puerto Vallarta. It is great fun to tour its streets, landscapes and beaches on bicycle or horse. One of its greatest attractions is fishing, especially of the valuable sailfish and its vast coastal line offers delicious dishes made of red snapper and sawfish. At Banderas Bay, the beautiful Bucerias Beach is perfect for surfing and offers many outdoor restaurants.
